Mos Def was given the name Dante Terrell Smith when he was born on December 11, 1973. He was raised with his mother, Sheron Smith, in Brooklyn, New York City, while his father, Abdulrahman Smith, resided in New Jersey.

Urban Thermo Dynamics, popularly known as UTD, is a band that was created in 1994 by Mos Def, his younger sister Ces, and his younger brother DCQ. “Manifest Destiny,” their lone album, was released in 2004.
In the meanwhile, Mos Def began to perform and release music on his own. He released “Universal Magnetic,” his first song, in 1997. He teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the rap group Black Star after this album, and he also signed with Rawkus Records.
