IN THE WOMB: WITNESS THE JOURNEY FROM CONCEPTION TO BIRTH THROUGH ASTONISHING 3D IMAGES

Review:

Created by a team of obstetric and imaging technology experts "In The Womb" gives us an intimate view into the world of the developing baby, right from conception to full term, through incredible computer generated photographs, along with ultrasound and electron microscope pictures.

Using amazing 3D and 4D imaging technology and remarkable award winning life-like models (based on ultrasound information), we can follow the baby as she goes through stages from a miniscule fertilised egg, an embryo, a fetus taking on recognisable human shape and, finally, a fully developed miniature person, ready to enter and survive on the outside world.

We witness the development blood vessels, bones, brain cells and internal organs... of facial features, and their change over time. We can even see varied facial expressions and hair growth. Tiny fingers and toes form, along with finger and toe prints! She shows a preference in thumb sucking, which is now believed to identify developing handed-ness, even before birth. The baby sticks out her tongue and learns to swallow.

She actively pursues varied movements which play a part in strengthening and co-ordination. Sleep, however occupies about 90-95 percent of her time... including about 80% REM sleep (compared to about 20% in adults). Is she dreaming? And if so, what does she dream about?

This book gives us an insight into the very real and recognisable little person growing inside of any pregnant woman. It would be hard not to marvel at this wondrous progression!

The book includes a fascinating section where the model creation and photographing procedures are explained.

"In The Womb" is based on the National Geographic's acclaimed television program, originally aired in 2005.

Author Peter Tallack gives us fascinating information to go along with the photographs, explaining what is going on at this stage of development, in an extensive and enthralling way.

Peter studied medicine and genetics at University College London, graduating in 1989, going on to work on the editorial staff of the international science journal Nature, for nearly 10 years. He also writes reviews for The London Times, Sunday Telegraph and The Economist and is the editor of The Science Book. Peter has 3 children- Hester, Edmund and Clara, who was born during the time he was writing "In The Womb".

An amazing chronicle of a baby's journey in-utero, this book would make an ideal gift for parents-to-be, or for anyone who is fascinated by the most incredible miracle of all-
the creation of life!
