AUSTRALIAN BABY NAMES

Deciding on the perfect name for your expected little one can be quite a daunting task. A lot of parents-to-be feel the pressure of making the "right" decision. A name is, after all, something that remains with your child for life (unless they change it), becoming part of who they are.

This task can be made even more confusing with pressures or assumptions from well meaning relatives and friends. Prospective parents should appreciatively take all suggestions on board, but may need to tactfully point out that in the end it is their decision. Just because "the boys in our family have always had George somewhere in their name", doesn't mean it always has to be so.

If the couple themselves have totally different likes, dislikes and expectations from the naming procedure, this can make coming to an agreement difficult. Couples should calmly discuss all their thoughts and reasons, never putting down or making fun of one partner's ideas, and explore all possible options to come to some agreement. With so many names available, hopefully in the process you will stumble upon something that just seems "the one" to both of you!

Remember to consider things like possible shortenings of the name, potential words spelt by the initials, or alternative meanings which could be cause for teasing.

Some parents opt to name their children with family names in honour of a loved one- such as those of parents, grandparents etc, or sometimes using their own names or middle names. Family names might also be used as the child's middle name, with a new name chosen as a first name. Children might also be named after close friends or other mentors or special people in the parent's lives.

To give the names a bit of individuality, sometimes various family names are combined or hyphenated to create a new name. For example, the two grandmother's names Jane and Ella might be combined to make Janella. Or Aunt Sadie and Aunt Anne might be hyphenated to Sadie-Anne.

Some families decide to name all of their children with names starting with the same letter. Or other specific criteria, such as after flowers, seasons, cities, or famous sports stars or other people they admire.

A lot of parents these days like to use totally unrelated names, giving their children a unique identity of their own. There are many huge lists, both online and in books, of possible babies names.

For the creative, imaginative parent, totally new names can be created! Maybe this might be the solution if you cannot agree on any names found so far. If you have two or more names that you can't decide between, could you create your own name out of these?

Some names can easily be used for either sex, and even some traditionally used for one sex can start to become popular for the other. Be a little careful with this, especially in naming a boy- "Marigold" may not thank you when he gets old enough for other boys to tease him!
