This is a fun photography and descriptive writing activity that needs to be done with a friend,

or family member.

From this, you will see how different people don't always interpret things in the same way.

WHAT TO DO:

Get your camera and go out and about looking for something you would like to photograph.

Don't make it too specific, as you want to allow room for different interpretations to occur. For example, if you took a photo of only a cow, and then described your photo as a photo of a cow, that doesn't leave room for much variety... although even this may be an interesting exercise to discover just how creative you and your friend can be in taking very different photos to represent something fairly specific.

Something like a more general country scene, with a cow in if you like, would be more generic and probably produce more obviously different photos.

Next, write a description of your photo. Not too specific, but enough to give a basic idea.

Now, ask your friend to go out and take a photo which matches your description.

How similar were your photos?
What differences did you note?
What interpretations of your description were taken by your friend in very different ways?

Now, swap with your friend and try the exercise again.

You could also try picking a word or short sentence that both of you go out and photograph and then compare results of your photographic interpretation.

Here's some suggestions:

  • Room with a view
  • Great achievement

  • Beyond belief
  • Transparent
  • In too deep
  • Ridiculous
  • Somewhere out there
  • Mistaken identity
  • You did what?!

Come up with a whole list and get creative!
