Shapes have a magic of their own… some more so than others. As Wizards you will often find shapes playing an important part in your magical activities, and daily lives.

Practise at recognising the presence of specific shapes, wherever you are, can be of great help.

Your challenge is to find as many different shapes as you can in nature and every day man made objects.

Research and make an illustrated list of all the shapes you can find out about.

Go out and about, with an adult, on a shape hunt! Look in and around your house… the local park… buildings… zoo… museum… signs… the scope is endless!

As you go you will need to photograph each shape.
Be creative in the way you take the photos.
Don’t always make it obvious what the shape is part of.

Print each photo… remember, you can crop and otherwise alter photos, if you have a suitable program for doing so such as Photoshop.

You could also scan and print photos to use in this project.

Make up a book (scrapbook, display folder) with your shape photos.

Use your initial illustrated list in the front as a reference page.

Design an interesting “shapely” cover.

Make little pockets beside each, or have referenced file cards or sheets.

On pieces of paper, or cards, label each photo with the shape you are portraying, plus what the shape is part of.

Eg.
Circle: Window of our local post office.

Diamond: Pattern on a snake’s back.

Star: Point of light on the water, using a starburst filter.

If you have gone with the pocket idea, hide a label in each appropriate pocket.

With file cards, give each photo a corresponding number to the card.

Ask a friend or two to try to identify the shapes and what they are from, without seeing the labels!

How well did they do?

Reveal the labels to them.
