Caravanning is a great way to see the country and meet people. South Australia has many wonderful destinations to pick from.

For those wishing to get into the fun of caravans there are many quality second hands vans available to suit your family size and needs. You can with a little careful selection enter the wonderful world of caravanning on a small budget of only a few thousand dollars. When you weigh that up and think of the many cheap family holiday that’s very good value for money.

The kids will love the wonderful destinations available within a short couple of hours from Adelaide.

A favourite destination of ours is Port Vincent. Port Vincent is situated an easy 200 km drive from Adelaide on the York Peninsula. It is a very nice family orientated destination. Very popular with young families in school holiday periods and at other times is very popular with older retired people.

fishing holiday

The fishing is top class with many varieties of species available from Blue Swimmer crabs, Gar Fish, King George Whiting, Tommy Ruff, Snapper, and Squid. At various times of the year the Mullet turn it on for the visiting angler and many bag limits of Mullet are caught from the beach right out from the Foreshore Caravan Park. There are plenty of Blue crabs to be caught if you wish to wade in the water and rake for them. Crab rakes and tubs are available for hire from the office of the Foreshore Caravan Park.

  • Shane and Louise Biddell manage the Foreshore Caravan Park and always have a warm and friendly welcome for visitors.
  • The park facilities are modern and extremely clean.
  • The toilets and shower blocks are bright modern and cleaned twice a day.
  • There are free electric BBQ available for residents to use and these are all clean and undercover.
  • There is a camp kitchen, which is fully equipped and an air-conditioned recreation room available for all to use.
  • There is a very handy fish cleaning area with running water and stainless steal sinks to clean your catch.

beach holiday

The caravan sites are very well kept and if you are lucky you may even manage to get one of the front sites that are only metres away from the beach. Sit back in your chair enjoy a cool drink or a nice cup of tea and look out into the bay. You may get to see one of the many dolphins that inhabit the bay and often swim just metres from the shoreline in the mornings and late afternoon. Take the kids near the fish cleaning tables and feed the local population of Pelicans, they are always hungry. The kids can play within full view on the beach while you sit back and relax. The bay is shallow and protected and very well suited to swimming and safe boating.

Port Vincent has a chemist, supermarket, take away food shops, and the meals served at the Hotel Vetnor are very well priced and delicious.

There is a children’s playground and a small boat ramp right next door to the Caravan Park. Port Vincent also has a good selection of cabins, units and houses that are available to rent. While there is no bank in the town you are able to access funds via EFTPOS in the stores, the corner deli has a State Bank Agency, the Post Office has a Commonwealth Bank Agency and the hotel has an ATM and lotto agency. A 5-minute drive takes you to the new and very modern Port Vincent Marina. There you will find a 2-lane boat-launching ramp with walk on pontoons and ample car parking. The ramp has a self-serve ticket machine for ramp fees.

If you go in the peak season December to February the attractions are New Years Day, the town comes alive with stalls of all descriptions and rides for the children. Australia Day is another celebrated day again with stalls of all descriptions; rides and now they have the Jet boat from Glenelg to add to the fun. There is also the yacht race with competitors from all over Australia.

Within travelling distance is Stansbury a very pretty town with a very long jetty, Wool Bay that has a jetty renowned for squid catches Edithburgh which has a lot of history, another long jetty and is the gateway to the bottom end. Just outside of Edithburgh is the states first wind generator farm, absolutely worth a visit, educational for both kids and adults, you get to see first hand how the animals and birds react to this new addition to the landscape.

So hook up the van and head off to one of our favourite Caravan holiday destinations. Port Vincent is a place for all the family to enjoy.
