MELROSE
Southern Flinders Ranges
Melrose not only boasts a spectacular backdrop of mountain ranges, but a status as the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. The discovery of copper nearby gave a huge boost to the town, which also became a police outpost for widespread patrols, as well as a hub for the surrounding pastoral community. Goyders line is located not far north, which made the area around Melrose the proclaimed northern limit for reliable agriculture, for farmers looking to start farming ventures in the early days of colonisation.
Today Melrose is still a thriving central town to the area, and is well serviced, with general store, service station, post office, shops, pubs and cellar door. A specialist mountain bike store is also located here, which is handy for those wishing to tackle the local cycle tracks or, for the more adventurous, the Mawson Trail long distance bike track. For those who enjoy bushwalking the Heysen Trail also passes though the area.
The Melrose Courthouse and Heritage Centre can be toured, and boasts a series of interpretive displays and a focus on early law enforcement.
Various events are held in Melrose each year, including the annual Show, the Rock the Mount concert in April and the Fat Tyre Festival (mountain bike) in June.
Mount Remarkable National Park is close by with spectacular gorges especially beautiful Alligator Gorge, walks from easy meanders to challenging hikes taking several days, lookouts and summits, picnic and camping areas.
A variety of accommodation options are available in Melrose including camping in the national park, hotel, caravan park with ensuite cabins, holiday cottages and Melrose Holiday Units.
