When it comes to sewing machines, although the number of available brands may not be as great as other products, the amount of variations available can seem daunting to virtually anyone.

From the most basic sewing machine to the more complex electronic sewing machines, there are so many choices available for you to choose from.

These sewing machines carry brand names like:

  • Bernina
  • Brother
  • Elna
  • Husqvarna
  • Janome
  • Pfaff

... and of course let’s not forget Singer the inventor of the sewing machine.

Although you may find places offering other “no-name” brands, chances are that these other machines are one of the major brands, just rebranded for a local department store chain.

When it comes to choosing the correct sewing machine though, this can be just as difficult of a task as figuring out which brand to get. The first and probably the most important part of the sewing machine that needs to meet your requirements is the bobbin. This can be either a front loading or a top loading bobbin, which ever you are more comfortable with. While the front loading bobbin is capable of holding more thread as well a being able to be shifted in its shuttle, many people may opt for the top loading bobbin as you are able to see how much thread is left in it.

Some sewing machines also may come with an automatic needle threader, which can be very important as well as time saving.

Unfortunately, in general, these automatic needle threaders have been found to be more difficult to manage and thread versus threading the needle the old fashioned way with a white background.

Most machines except for some specialised and computerised sewing machines also offer a foot pedal. This pressure pedal allows you to change speed as well as stop the sewing machine with ease as it can be controlled with the foot rather than having to take your hand off the work to flip a switch.

Speed selectors, tension adjusters as well as pattern controls are also very important when choosing a sewing machine.

Just remember that while having many options may seem at first to be a great thing, many people have found that too many options often make the entire process more difficult and confusing.

It is very important that when choosing a sewing machine, that it meets your requirements as well as being comfortable to you personally. While a friend may enjoy using one machine type, this same machine may be a pain for you to use due to the comfort issue. Take your time and choose the machine that is right for you as the last thing you would want to do, is to return the machine and replace it with another one which is just a waste of time.

Do some research on the Internet for the best price sewing machines.
