Digital Cameras
This electronic gadgets guide will give you some useful points of information about Digital Cameras that will help to guide you if you are looking at buying a digital camera for yourself or as a gift for family member, relative or friend.
Pretty much everybody has a digital camera these days (in fact with the digital camera technology constantly changing and improving, many people own several digital cameras!), ranging from the simple and easy to use point and shoot digital cameras all the way up to the most sophisticated and high resolution digital SLR cameras.
What are Digital Cameras?
Digital cameras are cameras whose primary purpose is to capture photography in a digital format. Initially, a digital camera was characterised by the use of flash memory and USB or FireWire for storage and transfer of still photographs, and this is still the common meaning.
Digital cameras big money savings comes through the fact that you can take many photographs and then select to keep only the ones you want and to optionally print only the ones that you really want to. Of course you can also digitally modify your photos on most computers with photo editing software.
Where can you buy digital cameras?
Digital cameras can be bought from many camera retailers, both online and offline.
In many cases you can buy digital cameras from department stores and electronic retailers.
What types of digital cameras are there?
Modern digital cameras have video functions, built in flashes, optical zoom and most have a rear LCD display for reviewing digital photographs.
More advanced cameras with the through-the-lens ability are digital SLR cameras.
Digital cameras are rated in megapixels; that is, their maximum resolution dimensions in millions. ( ie. 5mp camera , 6mp camera, 7.1 megapixel etc )
All digital cameras use either a CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) or a CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) sensor or novel sensors based upon either of those two principles.
What do you look for in Digital Cameras?
The most common resolution digital cameras today are 5MP and upwards with large rear LCD display and at least 3 times optical zoom. I would suggest that you only buy a digital camera that is rated at 5 megapixels or better for best image quality for the price.
When referring to zoom and digital cameras it is useful to know the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom. Optical zoom in digital cameras is zoom performed by the lens and it the best zoom for accurate and clear reproduction of images. Digital zoom, on the other hand, is zoom that is performed in-camera using software that just increases the image viewing size and decreases the quality of the image. Thus, optical zoom is always the preference over digital zoom in your digital camera. Preferably you would never use digital zoom on your digital camera as it results in poor image quality for reproductions and prints.
Nearly all digital cameras take flash card memory such as compact flash, sd card, sony memory stick etc.
Most digital cameras come with a small flash card memory, say 8MB, 16MB or 32MB, which is pretty inadequate for most people. You will need to buy a bigger card in most cases, and it doesn't hurt to buy a couple of them so that you can swap them out when they are full, between offloading the images to your computer.
( My suggestion on the small card is to put your best or favourite images onto the small card and then buy a digital photo frame and put it into that to display your great photos :)
Most digital cameras in use today are the compact digital camera variety which serves most people for general use. You can achieve very professional results with these digital cameras.
For even more professional digital camera results you can buy digital slr cameras with interchangeable lenses. These cameras are more expensive but have professional features as well as much higher resolution (megapixel) photographic results.
Professional digital SLR cameras have features such as long exposure, bracket flash sync, interchangeable digital auto focus lenses and superior onboard software and other high-level options to name a few.
How to buy the best price digital camera?
For the best price digital cameras you should research online and find the camera type and style that you want with all of the features you require and then you can cross reference these websites for the best price for the digital camera model that you select. That is how people are buying the best priced digital cameras for their needs.
Today's digital cameras are small enough (yet powerful enough) to carry around with you for any occasion or to keep in the car, handbag or pocket.
Good luck with buying your new digital camera and I hope you found this guide useful.
