CHEAP LAPTOPS ( or CHEAP NOTEBOOKS)
A laptop computer or simply laptop (also notebook computer or notebook) is a small mobile personal computer, usually weighing from one to three kilograms, depending on size, materials, laptop accessories and options and other factors.
While the terms "laptop" and "notebook" are often used interchangeably, "laptop" is the older term, introduced in 1983 with the Gavilan SC. "Notebook computer" is a later coinage, which was used to differentiate smaller devices. Also, laptop computers are sometimes known to generate some considerable heat when used on your lap for long periods of time and the industry change over to the term notebook computer was to move away from the intention to actually use the laptop computer on the lap.
The cheap laptops / notebooks Australia page will prove to be an excellent starting point for finding the ideal laptop or notebook for your exact mobile computing needs.

More and more, in combination with the rising popularity of notebooks, laptops are being bought on the internet which allows you to easily compare prices and easily select notebook accessories and options that personalise your selection to your exact needs. |

When buying a laptop computer you should look for the fastest cpu that you can buy - the faster your notebook goes now the longer it will last you before it feels slow compared to other computers in the future (notebooks don't slow down over time but software and operating systems make them seem like they do!). The second thing you should look for is getting the largest amount of notebook memory that you can, this way your notebook will make less calls to the harddrive when your physical (chip) memory runs out and will allow your notebook to run faster. |
| 5 |
Another thing you should look for is transferability, that is if you need to transfer data, document etc to another person or computer, how do you want to this? Options include; USB memory stick, burn a CD, burn a DVD (requiring your notebook to have the CD/DVD burner accessory). Another transfer option is networking, that is to transfer documents (etc) via a network to your destination, whether this is a LAN network or the Internet (these could also be wireless networking / bluetooth etc). If you need these options then you need to make sure you select them when buying a new laptop. |

CHEAP LAPTOPS Update...
Some resourceful companies have been looking into and developing some very cheap laptops. The OLPC plan is to provide one laptop per child to third world countries and the like for peanuts. The laptops are much reduced in laptop drive storage and memory as well as having a cheap laptop operating system built in. Currently, I believe, these OLPC laptops are not available in Australia. Will keep you posted!
Another promising development in the design and manufacture of the Eee laptop PC, the Eee PC has a small screen and similar trade-offs as the OLPC notebooks. Though, unlike the OPLC notebooks, the Eee notebooks are available to buy. Other manufacturers are also getting into these smaller, cheap laptops, so keep your eyes out and ears open if this type of cheap notebook is suitable for your notebook needs!
Acer and Samsung are also about to build what are currently know as Chromebooks, netbooks or notebooks based on Googles ChromeOS and Chrome browser. These Chromebooks are expected to first go on sale in June 2011 and will have features such as 11/12 inch screen, 6-8 hours battery life, 3G for Internet, no hard drives and 16 Gig of flash memory.
All your work will be saved in 'the cloud', that is, on the companies servers, accessible when you want with unlimited storage (this may depend on your cloud storage company). |
