WATER-WISE APPLIANCES
Information on reducing your water usage and expense,
with water saving products and appliances and tips on being water-wise.
With recent drought conditions, saving on water use is one of the most important issues in many parts of Australia today. Many people are looking for water saving appliances and other products to help make this easier.
What appliances are available to help us be water wise? The lists of brands below are not complete, but will give you somewhere to start. You can then proceed to check out the various brands and models online, or in store.
Remember, check the various models of each brand of appliance, as some are more water efficient than others. The higher the star rating the better water efficiency.
Water Saving Washing Machines
Washing machines can account for a large amount of household water used. By installing a water efficient washing machine, you may use only 1/3 of the water an inefficient machine uses. Front loaders usually have lower water usage.

Rainwater Tanks
Rainwater Tanks are an excellent way to collect water that would otherwise just go down the drain. It can then be used for drinking, garden watering, household appliances etc.
If you would like more information on types of rain water tanks available, check out our rainwater tanks page.
You may be able to get a government rebate for installing a rain water tank, in certain circumstances, so check with the appropriate authority.
Trigger Watering Nozzles
During water restrictions, trigger nozzles are often required on hoses for watering. Even if not, it makes sense to use a trigger nozzle, so that you can quickly turn off the flow when moving from area to area, so that water isn't wasted where it's not needed.
Watering System Controllers
Automatic watering system controllers allow watering of different garden zones at different times and days. This is useful when following your restricted watering schedule, during water restrictions. Try to purchase products labelled Smart Approved WaterMark2.
Rain Sensors
Rain sensors solve the problem of unnecessary over watering during times of rain, by shutting off your watering system, and therefore helping to save water. Smart Approved WaterMark2 labelled products recommended.
Soil Moisture Sensors
Soil moisture sensors turn off your automatic watering system when it senses that the soil has enough water. Smart Approved WaterMark2 labelled products recommended.
Down Pipe Water Diverters
Down pipe water diverters reroute water from your downpipes and into your swimming pool, rain water tank, or onto your garden.
Drought Tolerant/Resistant Plants
Planting the right kind of plants can help you save a lot of water. Some Australian natives, plus many exotics have a much lower water requirement than other thirsty plants. If you wish to have a lawn, remember that less frequent deep waterings are better than frequent shallow watering, as you train the roots to go deeper where less evaporation is occuring. For more information check out our page on Drought Resistant Lawn.
