HALLOWEEN PARTY GAMES

Halloween, or spooky theme parties are always a hit, with kids and adults (big kids!) alike.

Liven up your party with some fun Halloween games!

Some games are more suited to children, others for adults, and some will suit any age. Most of the games can be adapted to make them more suitable for whatever age group you are catering for.  Just keep in mind that little children may scare easily, or have nightmares after the event, so commonsense in game type, and way of presenting it, is needed.

Mummy Wrap

This game is played in pairs, or threes. Each team is given a roll of toilet paper. Strong tough paper (possibly cheaper brands) is best, so that it doesn't break too easily. One team member is the mummy.

Their job is to stand, or move, as requested by their partner(s), as they are wrapped from head to toe in toilet paper, much like a mummy is wrapped in bandages. Make sure a breathing slot is left open! Eyes can also be left uncovered, if preferred.

The game can either be played as the best mummy produced in a set time limit, or as the first mummy to be fully wrapped, depending on which would be best suited to your guests.

Ages, capabilities and whether you want a more relaxed, creative, skillful attempt, or a mad fun and laughter filled rush to the finish, should be considered when deciding which way to go.

Feed the Baby Vampire
(yum, yum...blood jelly!)

Before the game you will need to make bowls of set red jelly (jello), one for each pair of players. The game is played in sets of pairs. One player of each pair is the mummy/daddy vampire and the other is the baby. The baby sits on the mummy's/daddy's lap.

The object of the game is to be the first baby vampire to finish their jellied blood. The baby is not allowed to use his/her hands or help in any way, other than opening his/her mouth and chewing/swallowing the jelly.

When "Go" is called, each mummy vampire must loosely tie a "bib" (use tea towels or rags, if no real bibs are available) around his/her baby's neck. Then, using a tea spoon, he/she must feed the baby the jelly, spoon by spoon until all is gone. Another variable of this game, is for individual players to be given wide drinking straws, and be required to slurp up their blood jelly only through the straw.

Vomit Worm Feast

For this game, you will need to buy tins of spaghetti (enough for a small bowl for each player) and colour them with food colouring- purple, or green... something yukky looking. It is safer to use tinned spaghetti, as it is very soft and easily chewed. Home cooked dry spaghetti may still be a little too firm, and more of a choking risk.

Tell your players that they will be eating vomit worms or whatever gruesome name you like. Each player is then blindfolded and has their hands tied behind their back, before you bring in the worms. Each player should also have a "bib" tied loosely aroung their neck, as it could get messy!

When you bring them in, show those not playing and encourage (non verbally) groans of Yuk! Disgusting! I think I'm gonna puke! etc. You could make a sign which tells them to react this way, or privately speak to a few people, who won't be playing this game, beforehand, and ask them to do make some reactions.

***If your players are quite young, or likely to be sensitive, you can skip this bit, and even skip the blindfold part if you prefer.*** The idea, on "Go", is for the players to eat their worms, as quickly as possible, using only their mouths. First finished wins!

Will they dare to slurp what they can't see? For a bit of extra fun, have someone remove their blindfolds part way, so that they get to see the horrible worms they are devouring!

Goo Relay

Make buckets of very soft set jelly (jello, or gelatine) or cornstarch goo. You can colour it green and call it zombie slime, or red and call it blood.

This game needs to be played outdoors, and will require clean up, of both the players and the area.
Divide players into 2 teams.

Each team, using only their hands, must one at a time pick up goo from their bucket, run to the other end, and deposit the goo in another bucket. Once all players have run, or at the end of a time limit, the team who have accumulated the most goo in their other bucket, is the winner.

Cornstarch Goo recipe: One part water to four parts cornstarch and some food coloring.
Mix in buckets until it has a smooth consistency, and oozes in your hand when picked up.
Cornstarch Goo can be made by the teams themselves as part of the fun, if you like.

Witches Cauldron Lucky Dip

Use small prizes which are safe if wet, or sealed in watertight containers. Alternatively, use plastic number disks or similar. Make a big "cauldron" of red or green jelly. Or you could use cold, coloured, sloppy porrige.

Allow guests to reach their hands in, squish around, and pull out a prize, or a number which will correspond to their winning prize. Have rags on hand! You can also do this with a "cauldron" of yukky stuff like green dyed wet cooked spaghetti, rubber spiders, snakes, spider webs, eye balls etc.

Cemetery Dig/Grave Robbers

How you present and carry out this game can make it lighthearted, or much more gruesome for an older guest list. You will need a sandpit or similar for this.

Make small fake cardboard headstones, with fun sayings on them- "Here lies Timmy Tong, Tripped on his beard cos it grew so long!"

Set these in the sand at intervals, with humps in front of them.
Give each guest a spoon and allow them to dig, one or two at a time, for prizes in the graves!

Fearful Fishing

Make shapes out of light card, such as cats, bats, spiders, snakes, witches hats etc. Put a coloured spot or number on each one. Attach a paper clip to each one, and put them into a big tub or on the ground.

Guests use "fishing lines" made of sticks with strings tied on, and a magnet at the end.

Each guest fishes and draws out a shape. The number or coloured spot on the shape then matches up to a prize or treat, or can be used to decide an order for some other game or event. This can also be done with plastic shapes, placed in a shallow wading pool with water.

Crime Scene Photo

Divide your guests into teams. Give them props such as sauce (blood), fake knife, saw, rope, stockings and stuffing to make fake limbs, balloons for fake heads, dismantled mannequin parts, stage make up, masks, costume bits, wigs, and anything else you can think of.

Different items for each group allows for a bit of difference in results. The object is for them to create a gruesome, murderous tableau, using their props, people from the group etc. It can be straight out murder, or have zombies or other horrible creatures in it too, with their victims.

Once the scene is set, digital photos are taken. You can then put these onto a computer for all to see what each group did, or print them out for them to take home as a souvenir.

Spooky Story Puzzle

Print out one spooky story for each team (4 or 5 members per team), cut up into sections and stick on card. Either use a different coloured card for each team, or mark each story with a number or colour code. Hide the story pieces all over the place- include some interesting places such as in a jar with fake eye balls, in the fridge, in a pool of fake blood etc. Teams go in search, and find their correct story pieces. When they have found the correct number (tell them beforehand how many pieces there are, and make each one the same) they must assemble their story correctly. You can make the story ridiculous, so when it's assembled it's funny. Or even make different ways the story could be assembled, for a bit of fun, if you're clever! First team who has correctly assembled their story wins. Then get all the teams to read out their stories.

Spooky Card Hunt

Make a series of picture cards, with maybe 6 of each (number to suit ages of guests- 6 may be too many for very young ones, too few for older ones). Pictures such as cats, bats, spiders etc. You could make 2 or 3 sets of each picture, so that guests are racing against others to find their cards first.

Hide the cards all around the party area- some obvious places, some hidden.Assign each pair of guests a picture to collect. Eg. you may have 2 pairs looking for 6 cat cards, 2 pairs looking for 6 spider cards etc. The first pair to find all of their cards is the winner. You could also allow pairs to collect other cards they come across, and try to find who has what they want, and do a swap.

Spider Obstacle Course

This game is played with groups of 4 players, standing with backs in, holding hands with the player directly behind them, connecting them as a group of 4. This group represents a spider- 8 legs.

The group must make it through an obstacle course, or course of tasks to be performed, without disconnecting hands, in the quickest time. If the hands come apart, the spider must return to the beginning and start again.

The obstacles should be as safe as possible, and require group co-operation and discussion to complete successfully. Naturally, obstacles/tasks should suit the age group.

Spider Relay

Make a set of 4 legs, using old pantyhose, stuffed with newspaper or something soft, tied on a belt or rope, for each team of players.

Each person must have the legs belted/tied around his or her waist. Their arms and legs complete the 8 legs to make a spider.

They then scuttle on all fours, either facing to the ground, or upwards- you could decide they must alternate- from one point to another, where their next player is waiting.

The spider legs are then transferred to this player, who then scuttles back the other way, and so on until all players in the team have completed the relay. First team with all players home, wins.
