MOVIE SYNOPSIS

SNOW CAKE
-

Tight-lipped Englishman Alex Hughes (Alan Rickman) arrives in Northern Ontario on his way to meet the woman with whom he’s had a son. He’s bullied by an altogether unconventional but lovable 19-year-old hitchhiker Vivienne (Emily Hampshire) into giving her a ride to her hometown of Wawa. When the car is hit by a truck on the outskirts of her home town, Vivienne dies instantly. Alex finds himself, for the second time in his life, grieving for someone he never knew.

Shocked and stranded in snowbound Wawa, Alex is drawn to seek out Vivienne’s mother, to talk to her in person about the fate of her daughter. He also goes armed with trinkets and children’s amusements that Vivienne has picked up along the way for her mother. Alex knocks on the door and comes face to face with Linda Freeman (Sigourney Weaver). Linda is no ordinary Mother.

Alex soon becomes aware that Linda is an adult autistic, albeit a high-functioning one. He becomes increasingly involved in Linda’s life and the community to which she feels complete indifference, in large part because of her condition. Linda in turn becomes attached – as attached as she is emotionally capable of – to Alex and what he can do for her.

Alex also forms a relationship with Linda’s sassy independent neighbour Maggie (Carrie-Anne Moss), and is the object of scrutiny by the ineffectual local law enforcement officer Clyde (James Allodi), who, besides being jealous of Alex’s relationship with Maggie, believes he’s discovered a dark secret in Alex’s past.

SNOW CAKE REVIEW

This is one of those movies which you experience, rather than enjoy.  Despite excellent performances from Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver and Carrie Ann Moss, I found this film excruciatingly boring.  Having said that, I found myself compelled to see it out just to see where it would go.  Nowhere particularly interesting I’m afraid.  Don’t get me wrong, this is not a bad movie, just really slow and quite depressing.

It deals with the guilt felt by Alex Hughes (Alan Rickman) when he is involved in a car accident which results in the death of Vivienne (Emily Hampshire) who happens to be the daughter of a local autistic woman Linda (Sigourney Weaver).  Alex allows himself to be talked into staying with Linda when she explains the Vivienne takes out the trash every Tuesday and she can’t possibly do it herself as she doesn’t do trash.  Weaver’s performance, while adequate, doesn’t come close to the standard set by Dustin Hoffmann in Rainman all those years ago.  Rickman is as reliable as ever and it’s nice to see Carrie Ann Moss in something other than black leathers ala Matrix.   It is relative newcomer, Emily Hampshire, as Vanessa who steels the show even though her screen time is limited.  This is not an “avoid at all costs” movie by any means, just not one worthy of recommendation.

NOTES
TRIVIA: Sigourney Weaver prepared for her role as Linda, by spending time with a high functioning autistic woman from England called Ros Blackburn. Although not a direct portrayal of Ros (who in real life cannot live independently and cannot read or write), many of Ros's mannerisms and characteristics are very apparent in Linda, likewise the passion for trampolining and things sparkly.
